What is NAPLAN?
NAPLAN stands for, the National Assessment Program in Literacy And Numeracy.
It is an annual and nationwide assessment sat by students in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9.
Â
The test is designed to assess student’s understanding of critical literacy and numeracy skills throughout their schooling.
It ensures schools are progressing individually as well as in comparison to their peers on a national level.
Reading
Students are required to read a range of text types before being assessed on their knowledge and interpretation of language conventions in context.
This online test contains multiple-choice & technology-enhanced questions such as 'drag-and-drop' and 'hot-text'.
Writing
Students will be given 40 minutes to write either an imaginative, informative or persuasive piece based on a writing stimulus.
Year 3 students will complete this test on paper whilst Year 5, 7 and 9 students will undertake this exam online.
Conventions of Language
This test assess spelling, grammar and punctuation. It contains multiple-choice, text entry & technology-enhanced questions such as 'drag-and-drop' and 'hot-text'.
All students will sit this test online.
Numeracy
This online test will assess knowledge, skills and understanding of three content strands: number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability.
There are 2 sections for Year 7 & 9 students – a calculator and non-calculator section.
When is NAPLAN?
13th – 25th March 2024
The test has been recently moved from Term 2 to Term 1 to allow for results to be shared with teachers, students, and parents sooner.
Â
This has allowed teachers and educational institutions to adjust their approaches where needed as well as tailor learning to specific students’ strengths and weaknesses. It also provides parents with additional information on their child’s progress and if they would benefit from extra assistance or a different learning plan. Â
